Understanding Surf Etiquette in Morocco’s Crowded Lineups
Surfing in Morocco is a fantastic experience, but popular spots like Anchor Point and Imsouane can get crowded. Following universal surf etiquette is crucial for everyone's safety and enjoyment.
1. Right of Way: The Golden Rule
The surfer closest to the peak (the breaking part of the wave) has the right of way. Before you paddle for a wave, always look towards the peak to see if someone is already on it or in a better position.
2. Don't Drop In
Dropping in means taking off on a wave that another surfer is already riding. This is the biggest sin in surfing. It's dangerous and disrespectful. Always check before you go.
3. Paddle Wide, Not Through the Lineup
When paddling back out, don't paddle through the impact zone where other surfers are riding waves. Paddle wide into the channel (the area where waves aren't breaking) to stay out of the way.
4. Communicate and Be Friendly
A simple smile, a nod, or a friendly 'hello' goes a long way. If you accidentally get in someone's way, apologize. If you're unsure if it's your turn, communicate with the surfers around you. The vibe in the water is often what you make it.
5. Respect the Locals
Local surfers have been surfing these waves their whole lives. Give them priority, be respectful, and watch how they navigate the lineup. You'll learn a lot and earn their respect in return.
