What Fitness Level You Need for Moroccan Point Breaks

Surfing in Morocco is physically demanding in ways that casual weekend surfing is not. A typical day at an advanced surf camp involves: a dawn patrol session (2 hours of paddling, duck diving, and wave riding against currents), breakfast, a second session or guided trip to a remote break, and potentially an afternoon free surf. That is 4–6 hours in the water per day, for 5–7 consecutive days.

If you arrive unfit, here is what happens: Day 1 you surf hard and feel great. Day 2 your shoulders are sore but you push through. Day 3 you can barely paddle, your pop-up is slow, and you spend the session getting caught inside. Days 4–7 you are surfing at 50% capacity, watching the best waves of the trip roll through while you rest on the beach. This is the most common experience among surfers who do not prepare.

The fitness baseline for a week of Moroccan point breaks:

  • Paddle endurance: You should be able to paddle continuously for 2 hours without your form breaking down.
  • Swim fitness: You should be able to swim 400 metres in open ocean comfortably. If your leash snaps at Anchor Point, you are swimming 200–300 metres to shore through current and chop.
  • Breath-hold: You should be able to hold your breath for at least 30 seconds while under physical exertion — not lying still on a couch.
Did You Know?

The difference between a surfer who catches 15 waves in a session and one who catches 5 is almost always fitness, not skill. The fit surfer paddles back out faster after each ride, holds position in the lineup more easily, and has the energy to take off on waves that the tired surfer lets pass.

Building Paddling Endurance

Paddling is 90% of surfing. For every 10 seconds you spend riding a wave, you spend roughly 2 minutes paddling. Building paddling endurance is the single highest-return investment you can make.

Swimming (Best Cross-Training)

Freestyle uses the same lat, shoulder, and upper-back muscles as paddling. Aim for 3 swim sessions per week. Start at 500 metres per session and build to 1 km. Include interval training: swim 50 metres hard, 50 metres easy, repeat 8 times. This simulates the stop-start paddling of the lineup.

Gym Work for Paddling

  • Lat pull-downs: The primary paddling muscle. 3 sets of 12–15 reps, moderate weight.
  • Bent-over rows: 3 sets of 10–12 reps. Builds upper back and rear shoulders.
  • Prone dumbbell pulls: Lie face-down on a bench, pull dumbbells to your ribs. Mimics paddling most closely. 3 sets of 12 reps per arm.
  • Shoulder external rotations: Balance internal shoulder dominance with resistance band work. 3 sets of 15 reps.

If you can only do one thing, swim. Three 30-minute pool sessions per week for four weeks before your trip will make a bigger difference than any gym routine.

Breath-Hold Training

Breath-hold training is about staying calm when a wave holds you down longer than expected. Panic consumes oxygen, leads to bad decisions, and turns a 10-second hold-down into a traumatic experience. Training your breath-hold trains your calm.

CO2 Tolerance Tables (Pool)

CO2 tolerance is more important than raw breath-hold duration. When held under, the urge to breathe is triggered by CO2 build-up, not lack of oxygen.

Beginner drill: Hold your breath for 30 seconds. Breathe normally for 30 seconds. Repeat 10 times. Over weeks, increase the hold time to 45 seconds, then 60 seconds.

Critical Safety Warning

Never practice breath-holding in water alone. Shallow-water blackout is real and silent. Never hyperventilate before breath-holding — it lowers CO2 without increasing oxygen and can cause blackout without warning.

Core Strength for Surfing

Your core is the bridge between upper and lower body. Every turn, pump, and pop-up passes through your core. A weak core wastes energy; a strong core means your body works as one unit.

  • Plank rotations: Rotate hips side to side from plank position. Simulates cutback rotation. 3 sets of 10 per side.
  • Pop-up drills on land: Explode up from stomach. 10 reps, rest 30 seconds, 3 sets.
  • Hanging leg raises: Hang from bar, raise legs to 90 degrees. 3 sets of 10.
  • Russian twists: Seated torso rotation with weight. 3 sets of 20 twists total.

Flexibility & Mobility

A surfer who is tight through hips, shoulders, and thoracic spine cannot perform a full bottom turn, cannot compress into a barrel, and cannot rotate through a cutback.

  • Hip openers: Pigeon pose. Hold 60 seconds per side.
  • Thoracic spine rotation: Lie on side, rotate top arm open. 10 reps per side.
  • Shoulder mobility: Dislocates with resistance band. 10 slow reps.
  • Post-surf stretch: 10–15 minutes after every session. Shoulders, back, hips.

Pro Tip / Astuce SurfAgencyMorocco

The single best thing you can do in the four weeks before a surf trip? Swim regularly and surf as much as possible. Time in the water — any water, even a pool — is what builds real surf fitness.

Recovery Between Sessions

  • Sleep: 8+ hours per night. Non-negotiable. Bring earplugs and an eye mask for camp dorms.
  • Nutrition: Eat protein within 30 minutes of each session. Eggs after dawn patrol, grilled fish or chicken after the afternoon session.
  • Hydration: 3+ litres of water per day. Dehydrated muscles are stiff, weak, and prone to cramping.
  • Stretching: 10–15 minutes after every session. Focus on shoulders, lower back, and hips.
  • Rest day: On 7+ day trips, take one day off mid-trip. You will surf better on Days 6 and 7.

Surf Fitness Checklist

  • Start training 4 weeks before your trip — 3 sessions per week minimum
  • Swim 3x/week — build from 500m to 1 km per session
  • Add breath-hold training — CO2 tolerance tables, never alone in water
  • Strengthen your core — planks, leg raises, Russian twists
  • Stretch after every session — shoulders, hips, back
  • Sleep 8+ hours per night during your trip
  • Eat protein within 30 minutes of each session
  • Drink 3+ litres of water per day in Morocco
  • Take one rest day mid-trip on 7+ day camps

Frequently Asked Questions

What fitness level do I need for a week of surfing in Morocco?
You should be able to paddle continuously for 2 hours, swim 400 metres in open ocean, and hold your breath for at least 30 seconds under exertion. If you cannot do these three things, add 3–4 weeks of pre-trip training.
How do I improve my paddling endurance for surfing?
Swimming is the best cross-training. Swim 3 times per week, building to 1 km per session. The best paddling training, however, is simply surfing more often.
How do I train breath-holding for surfing?
Practice CO2 tolerance tables: hold your breath for 30 seconds, breathe for 30 seconds, repeat 10 times. Never practice alone in water. The goal is calmness under stress, not extreme duration.
How do I recover between surf sessions on a multi-day trip?
Prioritise sleep (8+ hours), eat protein within 30 minutes of each session, stay hydrated (3+ litres of water per day), and stretch for 15 minutes after every session. One rest day mid-trip is recommended for 7+ day camps.
