The Short Answer

For the best combination of consistent swell, comfortable weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices: visit Imsouane in March or October. For the biggest waves: January. For the quietest, most affordable trip with warm water: September. The Bay works year-round; the Cathedral works October through April.

Winter (Dec–Feb) — Peak Swells & Peak Crowds

This is Imsouane's high season, and for good reason. The North Atlantic is at its most active, pumping consistent NW groundswells into the bay. Head-high days are the norm, overhead days are common, and double-overhead days happen several times a month. If you want the biggest, most powerful version of The Bay and the Cathedral, winter is your window.

Water temperature: 16–18°C. A 4/3mm fullsuit is essential. Some surfers add a hood, booties, and gloves on the coldest January mornings, though most locals surf without them.

Air temperature: 15–22°C during the day. Mornings can be chilly (10–14°C), but by midday the sun is warm enough for a t-shirt.

Crowds: This is the busiest time of year. European surfers on winter escape trips, digital nomads, and surf camps all converge on The Bay. Expect 20–40 people in the water on good days. However, the wave's length means the crowd spreads out — it feels less intense than Anchor Point during the same period.

Prices: Peak season rates apply. Accommodation, surf camps, and flights are at their most expensive. Book at least 6–8 weeks in advance.

Watch Out

On the biggest winter swells (8 ft+), The Bay can close out and become unsurfable. On these days, the Cathedral fires — but only for advanced surfers. Beginners should stay on the beach or head to the inside reform near the river mouth, where the wave is smaller and more protected.

Spring (Mar–May) — The Sweet Spot

Ask any local guide when they would choose to surf Imsouane if they could only pick one season, and most will say spring. Specifically, March and April. Here is why: the winter swells are still delivering consistent waist-to-head-high waves, the water is warming up (17–20°C), the weather is beautiful (18–28°C), and the European winter surf-trip crowds have largely gone home. The lineup is half as busy as January, but the waves are still remarkably good.

March is the standout month. The sea is still lively from the winter swell season, but the sun is warmer, the days are longer, and the village has a relaxed, contented energy. Accommodation prices drop by 20–30% compared to peak winter.

April continues to deliver, though swells become slightly less consistent towards the end of the month. This is an excellent month for intermediates — waves are typically chest-high, forgiving, and the water is now warm enough for a 3/2mm wetsuit.

May is the transition month. Swells become smaller and less frequent — waist-high is typical. The water reaches 19–20°C, and the weather can be hot (25–30°C). It is a great month for beginners and longboarders, with very few crowds and excellent value.

Guides' Pick

"March is the month I would recommend to my own brother. You get winter-quality waves without winter crowds or winter prices. The water is still cool enough to feel refreshing under the sun, and the sunsets at 6:30 PM mean you can surf until late afternoon." — Hassan, SurfAgencyMorocco guide

Summer (Jun–Sep) — Quiet & Warm

Summer in Imsouane is the low season for swell, but the high season for relaxation. Waves are typically knee-to-waist-high, with occasional chest-high days when a summer groundswell comes through. The Cathedral is usually flat. But for beginners, longboarders, and anyone looking for a quiet, affordable surf trip in warm water, summer has real appeal.

Water temperature: 20–23°C. You can surf in boardshorts and a rash vest, or a 2mm top for the cooler mornings.

Air temperature: 22–35°C. It gets hot — midday sessions can be uncomfortable without a hat and sunscreen. Dawn patrol and late afternoon sessions are the way to go.

Crowds: Minimal. You might share The Bay with 5 to 10 other surfers — a stark contrast to the 30+ of winter. This is when Imsouane feels most like the sleepy fishing village it once was.

Prices: Summer offers the lowest prices of the year — often 30–50% less than winter. Flights to Agadir are cheaper, accommodation is discounted, and surf camps run summer specials.

The catch: Swells are less consistent. You might get a week of fun waist-high waves, or you might get three flat days in a row. If you are flexible and not chasing big waves, summer is a bargain. If you are an experienced surfer hunting performance waves, summer will leave you frustrated — visit in winter instead.

Autumn (Oct–Nov) — Season Kick-Off

October is when Imsouane wakes up. The first North Atlantic swells of the season arrive, bringing consistent waist-to-head-high waves after the quiet summer months. The water is still warm from the summer (20–21°C), the air temperature is pleasant (20–28°C), and the crowds have not yet reached their winter peak. This is arguably the best-value window of the entire year — good waves, warm water, moderate prices, and comfortable conditions.

November is a step up. Swells become more consistent and larger — head-high days are regular. Water drops slightly to 19°C, and a 3/2mm wetsuit becomes necessary. Crowds start building as the winter season approaches, but it is still quieter than December.

Local Knowledge

The sandbank at The Bay shifts between summer and winter. In October, the bank is still in its summer position (further north, near the river mouth), producing shorter rides. By November, it usually settles into its winter position (further south, near the point), producing the classic long rides. If you are visiting in early October, expect the wave to be shorter but punchier.

Which Season for Which Surfer?

  • Absolute beginner, never surfed before: May–October. Warm water, small forgiving waves, uncrowded lineups, relaxed vibe. September and October are ideal — warm water with the first returning swells.
  • Beginner with a few lessons, wants to progress: March–April or October–November. Consistent small-to-medium waves, moderate crowds, good value. You will get plenty of wave time to practise without the winter intensity.
  • Intermediate surfer (1–3 years): March–April or October–November. Waist-to-head-high waves at both The Bay and Cathedral, water warm enough for comfort, crowds manageable.
  • Advanced shortboarder chasing performance waves: December–February. The Cathedral fires on big winter swells, and day trips to Anchor Point (30 minutes south) add variety. Book early — winter camps fill up fast.
  • Longboarder seeking long, stylish waves: March–May or September–November. The Bay delivers its classic long rides, the water is comfortable, crowds are moderate, and the vibe is perfect for logging.
  • Budget traveller: June–September. The lowest prices of the year. Accept that waves will be smaller, and you will have a brilliant, affordable trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to surf Imsouane?
March is widely considered the single best month: consistent swells, warm weather, water warming up, and crowds thinning after the winter peak. December and January offer the biggest waves but also the biggest crowds. October and November offer warm water and fewer people.
Can you surf Imsouane in summer?
Yes — The Bay works year-round, but summer (June–September) brings smaller, less frequent swells. Waves are typically knee-to-waist-high, perfect for beginners and longboarders. The Cathedral is usually flat in summer. Water is warm (20–23°C) and crowds are minimal.
What is the water temperature in Imsouane?
Winter (December–March): 16–18°C. Spring (April–May): 17–20°C. Summer (June–September): 20–23°C. Autumn (October–November): 19–21°C. A 4/3mm wetsuit is recommended for winter, a 3/2mm for shoulder seasons, and boardshorts or a 2mm top for summer.
When is Imsouane least crowded?
May through September is the quietest period, with far fewer visiting surfers. October and April are moderately busy. November through March is peak season, especially December–February when European winter surf trips are in full swing. Dawn patrol (before 8 AM) is the best strategy to beat crowds year-round.
When are accommodation prices cheapest in Imsouane?
Summer (June–September) offers the lowest prices, often 30–50% less than peak winter rates. Shoulder seasons (October–November and April–May) offer moderate prices with good waves — the best value for money. December–February is the most expensive period.
What wetsuit do I need for Imsouane in January?
A 4/3 mm fullsuit is recommended for January. Water temperature drops to 16–17°C, and the air temperature in the early morning can be 10–14°C. Booties are optional for The Bay (sand bottom) but recommended for the Cathedral (reef).
Does it rain a lot in Imsouane?
Imsouane has a semi-arid climate with very little rainfall. The wettest months are November through February, but even then, rain is infrequent and usually passes quickly. The region averages over 300 sunny days per year. Rain rarely disrupts a surf trip.
When are the biggest waves at Imsouane?
December through February produces the biggest and most consistent swells, with head-high to overhead waves common. January is typically the peak month for swell size. On the biggest winter swells (8 ft+), The Bay can close out, and the Cathedral becomes a serious advanced wave.
Is September a good time for beginners in Imsouane?
September can be excellent for beginners — the summer crowds have gone, the water is at its warmest (21–23°C), and small-to-medium swells start returning after the quietest summer months. However, swells are less consistent than in winter, so there is a risk of flat days.
When should advanced surfers visit Imsouane?
December through March for the Cathedral, when the biggest NW swells light up the point. Pair it with day trips to Taghazout (30 minutes south) to surf Anchor Point on the same swell. January offers the most reliable big-wave window.
What is the best time of day to surf The Bay?
Early morning (dawn until 10 AM) is universally the best time — offshore winds are at their cleanest, the lineup is emptiest, and the light is beautiful. Late afternoon (4 PM to sunset) is the second-best window, with lighter winds and golden light. Midday can be wind-affected.
Can I combine Imsouane and Taghazout in one trip?
Yes — many surfers split their trip between the two. Taghazout (30 minutes south) is better for advanced waves, restaurants, and a livelier scene. Imsouane is better for long rides, beginners, and a quieter vibe. A 7–10 day trip split between both is an excellent formula.
